Light & Shadow #37

Family Photo — Deary, ID Circa 1979

I see a dad, mom, daughter, and rebel son. I have no way of knowing if these wool-bearing critters were familial, but they seem to pose for the camera as though they were. This picture is the one to survive from a story about a 60s vintage hippie ‘living off the land’ outside the small North Idaho town of Deary.

The weather was dreary in Deary that day. As much as I liked the picture, the negative lacked the details necessary to make a good print. Years later, hand-coloring allowed a way to re-interpret the photo and add what was lacking in the original.
